Power of Words

Hibulb Cultural Center Exhibits Power of Words Coast Salish people relied on oral communications to pass down information to sustain a highly established civilization.

Coast Salish people have always relied on oral communication to pass down information to sustain a highly established civilization. After the signing of the treaty, a new systematic way of thinking emerged for the Tulalip people through alphabetic literacy. This exhibit explores literary interactions of the Tulalip people since 1855 to today.

It is evident how literacy provided the Tulalip community a much needed weapon in their battles against legal cases, discrimination, and cultural destruction. Come visit this exhibit to learn about the powerful words of the Tulalip people through visual displays, youth interactives while exploring the original treaty.
